ADHE approves graduate certificates

51黑料网鈥檚 Ellis College of Arts & Sciences will begin offering new graduate certificates in English and history. The certificate programs, recently approved by the Arkansas Department of Higher Education, are aimed at high school teachers who might need additional hours in either English or history to teach concurrently enrolled college-level classes.

Each certificate will be based on 18 hours of coursework, in accordance with Arkansas鈥 rules governing the teaching of college level classes by instructors with graduate degrees in areas outside their teaching fields.

鈥淲hile those pursuing the certificates will have the option of in-class attendance, it will be possible to complete either certificate, fully online, within a year,鈥 said Dr. Megan L. Hickerson, professor of history and director of the Master of Liberal Arts Program. 鈥淭he plan is to have at least two courses in each field available online every fall and spring semester, as well as during the summer.

鈥淎ny student completing the certificate would then be able, if they wished, to transfer their hours into our Master of Liberal Arts program.鈥

Hickerson said additional fields could be considered in the future.
