An Embedded Librarian works closely with the instructor to supplement research instruction and provide customized library support for any course or assignment. This primarily includes helping students locate, evaluate, and use information resources effectively for specific projects. The Embedded Librarian can provide the appropriate information and guidance to the students from directly within their Canvas environment. The length and nature of the Librarian鈥檚 involvement with a class is entirely up to the instructor.
Instead of hoping students discover library resources, the library can bring resources to the students.
An Embedded Librarian Can
- Conduct a 15-20 minute in-class library instruction session on a topic like library resources or citations
- Embed materials like course-specific source links, research guides, and journal recommendations on Canvas
- Participate in discussion boards and respond to questions on Canvas
- Hold virtual or library office hours
- Offer individual attention to students during any stage of their research process
Other Services Can
- Give detailed feedback on writing and the writing process鈥攕ee the Writing Center
- Help with subject matter content鈥攕ee
- Provide technical assistance beyond library/database access鈥攕ee the Help Desk
Adding An Embedded Librarian To Your Course
Please email Ken Angell (angellk@hsu.edu) to start the process of adding an Embedded Librarian to your course. Based on your preferences, we can discuss how the librarian will be involved, what services they will provide, and what research project(s) your students will be working on. We ask that you provide at least a week of lead time on the assignment start date so the librarian has time to gather and evaluate enough resources for the students. The number of in-class sessions may be limited to ensure availability for everyone.
Note that the availability and implementation of this program are subject to change as librarian resources and instructor needs evolve.
