The Peer Research Help (PRH) program connects you with fellow students who have been trained to guide you through the research process. Think of it as a personalized, peer-led support service where you can get help navigating the library鈥檚 resources, developing your research skills, and enhancing your academic work.
Our Peer Research Help can assist you with a variety of tasks, including locating credible sources, narrowing your topic, and even with citation. Please note that help sessions are currently in-person only and subject to student worker availability.
Services Offered by Peer Research Help
Here鈥檚 what you can expect when meeting with a Peer Research Help:
- Research Strategy & Topic Development
Struggling to narrow down your topic? PRH will work with you to refine your research ideas and help you build a focused approach for your project. - Finding Scholarly Sources
Not sure where to look for high-quality sources? PRH can show you how to locate books, peer-reviewed journal articles, and other academic materials in your field of study. - Citations & Referencing Help
Confused by citation styles? PRH can help you understand how to properly cite sources in MLA, APA, Chicago, or other styles, and help you avoid plagiarism. - General Library Help
Need guidance on using the library鈥檚 online catalog, finding study spaces, or accessing library services like interlibrary loans? PRH can point you in the right direction.
Services Not Offered by Peer Research Help
While our Peer Research Helpers here to help with your research process, there are some things they don鈥檛 do:
- Subject-Matter Expertise
Peer Research Helpers are not subject specialists. While they are trained in research skills, they are not experts in every field. For in-depth subject knowledge, you may need to consult your professor or tutoring. - Full-Editing Services
PRH is not for proofreading or editing your papers or assignments. For detailed writing feedback, please visit the writing center or ask your instructor. - Personal Study Sessions
Peer Researcher Helpers won鈥檛 be able to sit through extended study sessions or gather resources for you. They focus on guiding you through specific research-related questions. - Technical Assistance
If you're encountering technical issues (e.g., problems with your computer, software, or online platforms), a Peer Research Helper will guide you on how to find tech support, but they won鈥檛 troubleshoot these problems directly.
How to Use the Peer Research Help Program
- Book an Appointment or Just Stop By
- You can book a session through the library鈥檚 online appointment system or by stopping by the library鈥檚 front desk.
- Sessions are available most evenings and on weekends
- What to Bring
- Bring a copy of your assignment directions. Having a draft or outline of your work can be helpful, but it鈥檚 not required.
- Prepare Specific Questions
- Be prepared to discuss your assignment, what you have tried so far, and the specific question(s) you have.
- Session Length
- Each session typically lasts between 10 to 30 minutes. If you need more time, you can schedule another session. If you just have a quick question, that鈥檚 ok, too.
- Be Ready to Learn
- Remember, PRHs are here to help you develop your own skills, not do the work for you. Come prepared to engage in the process. Be ready to ask questions and take notes so that you can learn as much as possible.
